Single-serving 'rice cooker' popular among elderly, businessmen

NAGASAKI, Japan - Photo shows a ceramic rice bowl that can cook a single serving of rice in a microwave. The new product, ''Takitate Ichizen'' (a freshly cooked cup of rice), developed by a ceramic ware wholesaler named Yamashita Toki in the town of Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, has been popular among the elderly and businessmen living away from their families, who have often ended up with too much cooked rice whenever they used rice cookers. 2 fish product dealers passed off Chinese eels as Japanese

KOBE, Japan - Takashi Ohori, president of Shinko Gyorui Ltd., a subsidiary of Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc., and other executives of the fish products wholesaler bow in apology at a news conference in Kobe on June 25, after the government accused the company and Uohide, an Osaka-based seafood dealer, of labeling grilled eels farmed in China as eels grown in Isshiki, a town in Aichi Prefecture famous for growing quality eels. Nagasaki gunman found dead, apparently committed suicide

SASEBO, Japan - Masayoshi Magome (photo), a suspect in a shooting rampage at a sports club in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, was found dead on Dec. 15, apparently after committing suicide. Magome randomly shot at the sports club Renaissance Sasebo on Dec. 14, killing two people and injuring six others. (Kyodo)

Asahi apologizes for plagiarizing Yomiuri report

TOKYO, Japan - Senior executives of the Asahi Shimbun apologize at a news conference on Feb. 1 for plagiarism involving a report by an Asahi photographer. The report was attached to a photo in the Jan. 30 evening edition of the Asahi Shimbun and was about the production of ''kammochi,'' a local rice cake delicacy in the town of Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture. The story was similar to an earlier Yomiuri Shimbun story on the same topic. (Kyodo)

50 whales run ashore on Japanese coast

HASAKI, Japan - About 50 whales run ashore along a 1-kilometer beach on the coast of Hasaki, Ibaraki Prefecture, on the morning of Feb. 11. Surfers and local residents were busy trying to rescue the whales, which appear to be black whales measuring about 2.5 meters in length, and get them back out to sea. Photo was taken at 9:30 a.m. from a Kyodo News helicopter over the town of Hasaki in the prefecture.

Bridge over Nagara River partially destroyed

SHIRATORI, Japan - The photo, taken from a Kyodo News helicopter at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, shows a bridge over the Nagara River in the town of Shiratori, Gifu Prefecture, washed away by floodwater caused by Typhoon No. 16. About 700 residents in nearby areas took refuge from the swollen river.
