Hitachi robot navigates its way to take images

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said on March 7 it has developed a robot (in handout photo) that moves indoors negotiating its way around obstacles and uses a surveillance camera to take images. The robot, which measures 57 centimeters high and 50 cm wide and weighs 33 kilograms, is powered by a battery to travel at a speed of one kilometer per hour on two tire wheels. The company said the robot can detect more things as compared with one with a surveillance camera fixed onto one spot. (Kyodo)

      HAGA, Japan - A handout photo shows a humanoid robot designed to take on work at construction sites and other risky places unveiled by Bridge builder Kawada Industries Inc. and two partners on Sept. 8. The HRP-3P robot demonstrated its functions at Kawada's plant in the town of Haga in Tochigi Prefecture, walking on an icy surface as well as walking under simulated heavy rainfall. The battery-powered robot, which is 160 centimeters tall and weighs 65 kilograms, carries out remote-controlled and preprogrammed work. (Kyodo)

        Mitsubishi Heavy to take orders for Wakamaru robot in Sept.

        TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said Aug. 29 it will accept orders from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31 for the Wakamaru humanoid robot (in photo) for use at home. Mitsubishi said it plans to sell 100 of the robot at a price of 1.58 million yen each, including consumption tax, initially for residents of Tokyo's 23 wards. It will select buyers by lot if too many people place orders. Wakamaru, 1-meter high and 30 kilograms in weight, is powered by rechargeable batteries and moves on wheels. It can work as a ''secretary,'' taking note of the owner's schedule and announcing appointments. It can also serve as a ''watchdog'' by alerting the home owner in the event of a break-in, the company said. (Kyodo)

          TOKYO, Japan - A bipedal, chair-shaped robot developed by Waseda University and Fukuoka Prefecture robotics firm tmsuk Co. carries a model at the university in Tokyo on Nov. 21. The robot, which is 1.2 meters tall and weighs 60 kilograms, can walk at a speed of about 1 kilometer per hour. (Kyodo)
