1st batch of Japan's relief team arrives in disaster area
QINGCHUAN, China - The first group of Japan's emergency disaster relief team reaches Qingchuan County in the western Chinese province of Sichuan on May 16 to begin rescue and recovery operations after a devastating earthquake on May 12. The group of 31 workers, the first foreign rescue team to arrive in China, reached Guanzhuang Town in Qingchuan at around 10 a.m. on May 16, traveling by land after arrival at the airport in Sichuan's provincial capital Chengdu early in the day. Qingchuan is located 250 kilometers northeast of the epicenter and 400 km from Chengdu. (Kyodo)
