4 dead, 5 missing after 2 freighters collide off E. Japan

NARITA, Japan - Chinese crew members of the 3,947-ton freighter Wei Hang 9 get off the 499-ton freighter Kaishin Maru at Choshi port in Chiba Prefecture on July 22. They were rescued by the Kaishin Maru after the two freighters collided in the Pacific Ocean off the prefecture, killing four Chinese crew members and leaving five others missing. (Kyodo)

Destroyer primary cause of collision with boat: tribunal

4 bodies recovered from sunken boat off Aomori Pref.

AOMORI, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard on April 7 recovered a body from a sunken scallop fishing boat in Mutsu Bay off Aomori Prefecture and another three bodies from the seabed around the vessel. Relatives (two in center) of still missing fishermen are told by a rescuer (L, bottom) that three bodies had been found. Eight crew members aboard the 5.1-ton Nikko Maru went missing on April 5. March held in Shizuoka to mark 1954 Bikini Atoll H-bomb test

SHIZUOKA, Japan - About 1,000 people march in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture on March 1, calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons in commemoration of the 54th anniversary of the irradiation of the crew of a Yaizu-based Japanese fishing ship by a U.S. hydrogen bomb test at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. A march participant carried a photo of Aikichi Kuboyama, the ship's chief radio operator who died six months after the irradiation at the age of 40 and became a symbol of the 1954 incident. (Kyodo)

Relatives of missing fishermen visit accident site

CHIBA, Japan - The families and relatives of two fishermen, who went missing after their boat collided with a Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis-equipped destroyer, visit the accident site in the Pacific off Chiba Prefecture on Feb. 23. Some 30 relatives of Haruo Kichisei, 58, and his 23-year-old son Tetsuhiro of the 7.3-ton Seitoku Maru visited the site.
