Hokkaido cranes to Taiwan
KUSHIRO, Japan - Local elementary school pupils sing during a ceremony in Kushiro, Hokkaido, northern Japan, held on Sept. 13, 2011, prior to the departure of a pair of red-crowned cranes to Taiwan. The city of Kushiro will lend the birds, a species designated as a special national natural treasure, to Taiwan for an indefinite period of time. Known as a symbol of longevity and conjugal love in Japan, the crane is also popular in Taiwan, which asked Kushiro in 2009 to donate some of the birds. (Kyodo)
