Venerable cinema houses in Osaka give way to cineplexes

OSAKA, Japan - Two venerable cinema houses in Osaka -- OS Gekijo and OS Meigaza -- will be closing their doors on Sept. 21, victims of the invasion of multi-screen cineplexes that offer spectators multiple choices in the movies on show. Opened in 1959, OS Gekijo specialized in western movies and spawned OS Meigaza in the same building about 10 years ago. After refurbishing, the two cinema houses will be reborn as an ''annex'' of Toho Cinemas Umezawa, the largest cineplex in Osaka, on Oct. 1. (Kyodo)
