'Jumping' slime flounders attract visitors at Japanese aquarium

FUKUI, Japan - A slime flounder ''stands up'' for food at an aquarium in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast for their performance of ''jumping'' for food. Echizengani Museum staffers said the flat fish, before asking for food, ''stand'' 20 centimeters and show themselves above the surface while ''looking around'' with big round eyes. (Kyodo)

Initiation ceremony in water at aquarium

TSU, Japan - Visitors watch an initiation ceremony for a new employee in an acrylic water tank at the Toba Aquarium in the city of Toba, Mie Prefecture, on April 1. Chiaki Sawayama, surrounded by about 300 fish and turtles of 100 kinds, received a letter of approval for her recruitment from a deputy chief of the aquarium during the ceremony. Golden stinger fish caught in Pacific off Mie Pref.

TSU, Japan - This photo taken Jan. 23 shows a rare golden demon stinger displayed at the Shima Marineland aquarium in Shima, Mie Prefecture. The fish was caught in the Pacific off the nearby town of Minamiise on Jan. 4. Aquarium researchers say demon stingers are usually a blackish-brown color and hope the unusual golden fish will ''bring aquarium visitors good fortune.'' (Kyodo)

Humanoid robot for risky work unveiled

HAGA, Japan - A handout photo shows a humanoid robot designed to take on work at construction sites and other risky places unveiled by Bridge builder Kawada Industries Inc. and two partners on Sept. 8. The HRP-3P robot demonstrated its functions at Kawada's plant in the town of Haga in Tochigi Prefecture, walking on an icy surface as well as walking under simulated heavy rainfall. The battery-powered robot, which is 160 centimeters tall and weighs 65 kilograms, carries out remote-controlled and preprogrammed work. (Kyodo)
