The oriental white stork is a migratory bird under first-class national protection in China and listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The endangered species was first spotted in the village 12 years ago, when a villager rescued one from a big well. Since then, villagers have been engaged in protecting them. They will prepare food for those wintering in the village. SOUNDBITE 1
