In the heart of Budapest's Gellert Hill, the country's largest underground reservoir is located behind 35-centimeter-thick concrete walls. The underground facility consists of two giant concrete pools of 5,000 square meters that each is capable of storing 40,000 cubic meters of water.
Budapest Waterworks company celebrates the World Water Day with public visits of their underground water reservoir where visitors can get a glimpse into the operations of the facility that provides a large portion of the city with clean drinking water.
Gellert Hill water reservoir was built in 1904 and expanded in 1974 and 1980 to the current capacity that provides the majority of Budapest's drinkable tap water.
