STORYLINE:
The European Union (EU) is under mounting pressure to ban the imports of Russian energy as European leaders and U.S. President Joe Biden are set to meet and discuss deterrence measures against Russia at an EU summit on Thursday.
Since over 40 percent of the EU's natural gas and 25 percent of its oil consumption come from Russia, the member states are split on whether an embargo on Russian energy imports should be put in place.
The sanctions imposed by the U.S. and the United Kingdom (UK) on Russia's energy sector in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict have already sent shockwaves through the world's energy markets.
