STORYLINE:
The Russian crew from the International Space Station (ISS) celebrated Cosmonautics Day, a day to commemorate the first manned space flight by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
"His (Yuri Gagarin's) flight was the pinnacle of the selfless labor of many specialists, workers, engineers and designers, and demonstrated to the whole world the superiority of domestic science and technology," said cosmonaut Denis Matveev.
His colleague Sergei Korsakov also thanked all those who work "for the benefit of space exploration."
On April 12, 1961, the Vostok-1 launch vehicle delivered Yuri Gagarin into Earth's orbit. In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted this date as the International Day of Human Space Flight.
