STORYLINE:
Data released by the Indian ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) Thursday said India's retail inflation rose to 7.79 percent in April.
The food inflation meanwhile surged to 8.38 percent in April from 7.68 percent in March.
According to officials, the price data was collected from selected 1,114 urban markets and 1,181 villages covering all states through personal visits by field staff of MoSPI's National Statistical Office (NSO) on a weekly roster.
The rise in inflation is attributed to a sharp increase in the price of food and oil.
In April 2021, retail inflation was 4.23 percent while food inflation was 1.96 percent.
