When the COVID-19 epidemic hit central China's Wuhan city in 2020, a hospital in Huizhou, about 1,000 km south to Wuhan published a call-up message to recruit medical staff to aid Hubei.
Liu Jiayi, a nurse two months away from her 20th birthday, was the first to sign up. She became the youngest member of the medical-assistance team dispatched by Guangdong Province to assist with Wuhan's battle against COVID-19.
In October 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping told the story of Liu Jiayi at a high-level meeting on the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
