STORYLINE:
More than 100 Afghan youth participated in a wrestling competition held in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan on Friday, according to a local official.
About 100 sportsmen from nine Kurash wrestling clubs from Kabul participated in the one-day competition, said Mohammad Ashraf Taqdeer, deputy to Afghanistan Kurash, Sambo and Belt Wrestling Federation.
"The purpose of holding today's competition is to grow, develop and promote Kurash wrestling among the Afghan youth. Sport can contribute to the development of our society and directly affect the health of our youth. Launching sports competitions keeps young people away from drug addiction," he said.
The Taliban-led caretaker government and the Afghan National Olympic Committee were supporting sports in the war-torn country, according to Taqdeer.
