Mission to research sunken boat in northern Japan
Photo taken on May 17, 2022, shows a workboat at a port in Abashiri, on the northernmost Japanese main island of Hokkaido, ahead of its mission to research a tourist boat that sank off Hokkaido's Shiretoko Peninsula with 26 people aboard on April 23. The vessel, operated by Nippon Salvage Co., will head to the site of the accident, off the city of Shari, on May 18, with the operation set to start on May 19 at the earliest involving divers trained using a special method called "saturation diving."
