STORYLINE:
World Environment Day, designated by the United Nations (UN) to foster environmental awareness and prompt action, is celebrated annually on June 5.
Through the years, China has marked the day with solid steps in environmental protection.
Saihanba mechanized forest farm, the world's largest artificial plantation, in north China's Hebei Province is one of China's many environmental protection efforts.
Saihanba was once a royal hunting ground of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but by the late 1950s, it had degraded into an area of barren wilderness.
