STORYLINE:
A plan aiming at tackling street crimes such as bag-snatching and pickpocketing has been underway in Barcelona since June 1, as tourism returns to the city.
Police presence on the city streets has increased by 12 percent. The extra patrols by both uniformed and plain-clothed police officers will focus above all on tourist hotspots in the city centre, shopping areas, and the city's beaches.
With tourism expected to return to pre-pandemic levels, the city authorities have prioritized handling street robbery, including introducing legislation targeting repeat offenders.
