World Elephant Day falls on Aug. 12 every year. Southwest China's Yunnan Province is embracing a wild Asian elephant "baby boom."
The population of wild Asian elephants in Yunnan reached approximately 360 by 2021, an increase of more than 60 from the 293 recorded in 2018.
Asian elephants, an important species in the rainforest ecosystem, are under first-class national protection in China. The elephants are mostly found across Yunnan.
