STORYLINE:
Local authorities kicked off construction of a new canal project in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Sunday.
The Pinglu Canal will stretch for 135 km with an estimated investment of 72.7 billion yuan (about 10.58 billion U.S. dollars).
It aims to link Xijiang River, a major waterway in southwest China, with ports in the Beibu Gulf.
The canal will open a shorter route to the sea for Guangxi and other regions in southwest China.
