Wearing seat belts for all passengers including those sitting on the rear seats while commuting in a car has been made mandatory in India.
Those found violating the rule will be penalized. A detailed notification will be issued soon, announced federal Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday evening.
The announcement came two days after India's prominent businessman Cyrus Mistry died in a car accident near Mumbai.
At the time of the road mishap, Mistry was sitting on the rear seat of the car and was not wearing the seat belt. Another passenger sitting beside him on the rear seat also died in the accident, while the two passengers sitting on the front seats and wearing seat belts were found alive though grievously injured.
