STORYLINE:
The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan's Taliban-run caretaker government initiated a nationwide four-day vaccination campaign against polio on Monday.
"The four-day vaccination campaign covers 9.9 million children under 5 in the country's 34 provinces," the ministry said in a statement.
Aimed at eradicating the crippling disease in the country, the immunization campaign has been supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) over the past several years.
So far this year, two polio cases have been detected in Afghanistan.
