STORYLINE:
The eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus celebrated 62 years of independence on Saturday.
A military parade was held in the capital Nicosia, which was attended by Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.
Speaking after the parade, Anastasiades said that Cyprus is obliged to strengthen its armed forces, and at the same time will continue its efforts for a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.
Cyprus became independent on Aug. 16, 1960 after a century of British colonial rule. Oct. 1 was chosen as the official Independence Day to avoid celebrations amid scorching temperatures in summer.
