STORYLINE:
New Aden, a very large crude carrier (VLCC) with groundbreaking sails design, has been delivered to its customer in China's coastal city of Dalian.
Built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., the vessel is 333 meters long and 60 meters wide with 300,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT). Its maximum draft, which determines the maximum depth of water a ship can safely navigate, reaches 20.5 meters.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LI JIMING, Project manager of VLCC, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd.
"We used carbon fiber nonmetallic material. Firstly, this material will reduce its overall weight, and cuts down some costs in installation and use. And the two pairs of sails will greatly save energy."
