The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population announced on Wednesday that 1.68 million women in the country have been examined for early detection of diseases that are easily transmitted from the mother to the fetus, as part of President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's initiative to "care for the health of the mother and fetus."
Dr. Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, indicated that the initiative aims at early detection of HIV infection and syphilis for pregnant women, in addition to reducing maternal deaths resulting from these diseases.
