U.S. aircraft carrier Independence
People bid farewell to the U.S. aircraft carrier Independence leaving the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, on July 7 after ending its six-year, 10-month mission in Japan. The 80,643-ton ship will transfer its duties in Hawaii to the U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, which will arrive in Yokosuka on Aug. 11. The Independence, commissioned in 1959, will be decommissioned in September after returning to San Diego, California.
