Beetle vending machine

The latest addition to the country that abounds in all sorts of vending machines is a ''beetle vendor'' installed in the town of Yamanokuchi in Miyazaki Prefecture on Friday July 24. The owner of the machine reckons it will have good customers among school children.

      YAMANOGUCHI, Japan - Photo shows a vending machine selling live beetles. Kunji Shimbori, a lunch-box store employee, is doing a thriving business off Route 269 in Yamanoguchi, Miyazaki Prefecture, with a novel idea -- selling live beetles in a vending machine. Packed in twos or threes inside transparent cases, the insects -- which are immensely popular with Japanese kids -- fetch 600 yen per case. For bigger insects, each pack goes for 800 yen.

Developed by a local machinery maker, the automatic beetle dispenser has caught the fancy of local kids, who, the owners say, empty the stock every day. Beetles are kept as pets by children in Japan.
