Nara temples expected to be on World Heritage List

The World Heritage Committee (WHC) is expected to decide, on Dec. 2,1998, on placing some of the temples and shrines in Japan's ancient capital of Nara on the World Heritage List. The photo, taken on Dec. 1,1998, shows the Yakushiji Temple, one of the Nara treasures. The WHC is likely to announce the inclusion of the new sites in the World Heritage List on Dec. 5, 1998, at the close of its annual meeting, which began from Nov. 30, 1998, in Kyoto, another ancient capital north of Nara, both in western Japan. The temple was built early in the 8th century.

Festival in Nara welcomes demons kicked out elsewhere

TONDABAYASHI, Japan - A traditional Japanese "setsubun" festival commemorating the turn from winter to spring is held at Kimpusenji, a temple on Mt. Yoshino in Nara Prefecture, on Feb. 3, 2014. Buddhist statues at Nara temple get New Year's dust-off

NARA, Japan - - The three Buddhist statues at the Golden Pavilion of the Yakushiji temple in Nara get a New Year's dust-off in a cleaning ceremony attended by 500 visitors on Dec. 29. The photo shows the two bodhisattva statues, Nikko on the left and Gakko on the right, being carefully cleansed by Buddhist priests. The sitting Tathagata statue in the center shines after cleansing. Nikko and Gakko will be exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum in March next year for a four-month period. The three Buddhist statues are designated national treasures.

Japan to recommend Kii holy grounds to UNESCO heritage list

TOKYO, Japan - The Cultural Affairs Agency decided Dec. 6 to recommend the holy grounds and pilgrimage path (in file photo) in the Kii mountains, western Japan, to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The proposed site comprises holy grounds of three religions -- Shinto, Buddhism and Shugendo -- and the pilgrimage path that links them. The area covers Mie, Nara and Wakayama prefectures.
