Tokyu Nihombashi lowers curtain on 337-year history

Tokyu Department Store Co.'s Nihombashi store, whose origins trace back to the Edo period, lowers the curtain Jan. 31 on its 337-year history. Hundreds of shoppers applauded as the store downed its shutters. Tokyu decided to close the store as part of its restructuring efforts last September.

        TOKYO, Japan - Shoppers jostle for New Year ''lucky bags'' on sale on the first business day of the year at a department store in Tokyo's Nihombashi district on Jan. 2. About 5,000 people lined up at the Mitsukoshi Nihombashi store, which offered heavily-discounted ''lucky bags'' for 10,500 yen, while about 20,000 people waited outside the Ikebukuro main store of Seibu Department Stores before it opened for business. The New Year ''lucky bags'' usually contain merchandise sold normally at a much higher price.

            NAGOYA, Japan - Kunihiko Okada (R), president of department store operator Matsuzakaya Co., tells reporters in Nagoya on Jan. 30 that the company will close its loss-making outlet in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, western Japan, on May 31. The Yokkaichi store, which opened in 1991, incurred a cumulative 18.8 billion yen loss in the 1999 business year.

              Shoppers flock to Sogo's Yurakucho store for closing sale

              TOKYO, Japan - More than 2,000 shoppers line up Sept. 3 before the doors opened at failed department store operator Sogo Co.'s Yurakucho outlet for the start of a 15-day going-out-of-business sale. The giant Osaka-based retailer decided to close the 43-year-old store on Sept. 24 as part of its rehabilitation plan. The Sogo group filed for protection from creditors with the Tokyo District Court in July, saddled with 1.87 trillion yen in debt.
