4,000 yen off-season watermelons
Watermelons produced by hothouse farmers in Ueki, Kumamoto Prefecture, southern Japan, head to the market Feb. 19. All the 10,000 watermelons collected in Ueki were screened by specially designed sugar sensors to determine the sweetness grade before shipment. These off-season watermelons, each with a ''sweetness mark'' stamped on the skin, fetch as much as 4,000 yen each at stores in Tokyo and Osaka.
