Season for cormorant fishing begins

The season for ukai, Japan's traditional method of catching small river fish by manipulating trained cormorants, gets under way on River Nagaragawa in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, on May 11. Ukai, now a tourist attraction, has a long history dating back to 7th century.

              Mandarin ducks arrive in Tottori Pref.

              Mandarin ducks are seen at a river in the town of Hino in Tottori Prefecture, western Japan, on Oct. 31, 2024, after flying in from the north. As of Nov. 11, about 400 Mandarin ducks were spotted on the river, a popular stopover for the birds in the wintering season, with around 800 expected to fly in by the end of March 2025.
