Court rejects suit against Yasukuni enshrinement

NAHA, Japan - One of the plaintiffs (front) of a suit against their relatives' enshrinement at the war-linked Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo makes an appeal in front of the Naha branch of the Fukuoka High Court in Okinawa Prefecture before the ruling on Sept. 6, 2011. The branch upheld the same day a lower court decision to reject the suit by five Okinawa Prefecture citizens, who asked the central government and the Shinto shrine to delist their 10 deceased relatives' enshrinement at the shrine and to pay a total of 500,000 yen in damages for mental pain they claim to have suffered from the enshrinement.

Nobel laureate Oe believes military order behind mass suicides

OSAKA, Japan - Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kenzaburo Oe arrives at the Osaka District Court on Nov. 9 to testify in a hearing on a suit filed against him. Yutaka Umezawa, 90, who was the garrison commander on Zamami Island in the Okinawa island chain during World War II, is seeking to halt the publication of three books by Oe which Umezawa argues wrongly state that military officers on Zamami and Tokashiki islands in Okinawa Prefecture ordered civilians to commit mass suicide in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa.

NAGOYA, Japan - The Nagoya High Court on May 31 upheld a lower court decision that dismissed claims by seven South Korean plaintiffs who sought compensation over forced labor at a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. munitions factory in Nagoya during World War II. Yang Gum Dok (C), 76, one of the plaintiffs, collapsed into tears after the judge handed down the sentence.
