Chip makers to cancel summer vacations to meet demand

TOKYO, Japan - A file photo shows the liquid crystal panel plant of Toshiba Corp. in Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Toshiba and four other Japanese electronics makers plan to cancel planned summer holidays at their production plants for semiconductors and liquid crystal panels in order to meet soaring demand. The other four are Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Hitachi Ltd., NEC Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd.

                TOKYO, Aug. 6 Kyodo - Michael Rawding, president of Microsoft Co., the Japan arm of Microsoft Corp., speaks at a news conference at a Tokyo hotel Aug. 6. He said five of Japan's major computer makers will start selling personal computers (PCs) equipped with the Japanese version of the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system in the fall. The five are Fujitsu Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., NEC Corp., Sotec Co., and Toshiba Corp.
