Nemuro residents try to save historic link to Kunashiri

KUSHIRO, Japan - This photo shows a former communications facility in Japan's easternmost city of Nemuro that linked, via an underwater cable, the city and Kunashiri Island from about a 100 years ago until the end of World War II. A movement is spreading to preserve the facility among second-generation former residents of Kunashiri Island, which was seized by Soviet troops at the end of World War II.
