Sanyo develops world's thinnest cellular phone

OSAKA, Japan - Sanyo Electric Co. has developed what it claims is the world's thinnest and lightest cellular phone, using code division multiple access (CDMA) technology. The Osaka-based consumer electronics maker will put the unit, 9.9 millimeters thick and weighing 57 grams, on sale in fall 2000.

The device, 24 centimeters by 19 centimeters, is equipped with light emitting diodes on the reverse side for outdoor lighting and a USB power charger for mobile phones. When fully charged under the sun for 15 to 30 hours, the nine LEDs can light up for nine hours. The stored electricity can alternatively be used to charge a mobile phone once, Sanyo says. The retail price is set at around 16,000 yen.
