          KARAMYK, Kyrgyzstan - A group of freed Japanese and Kyrgyz hostages, including Toshiaki Ariie (far R), walk to a military helicopter in Karamyk in southern Kyrgyzstan to fly to the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek via Batken. Four Japanese and one Kyrgyz national, who were abducted by Muslim guerrillas in August in southern Kyrgyzstan, were released late Sunday.

              BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - This photo, taken Oct. 25 in Bishkek, shows Kyrgyz interpreter Omurbek Zhanakeev, who was freed along with four Japanese mining engineers on Oct. 24 after being held hostage for two months by Islamic rebels in Central Asia. Kyrgyz-born Zhanakeev, 35, started learning Japanese in Moscow while studying mining. He stayed in Japan for a year from September 1993. After returning to Kyrgyzstan, he participated in establishing a Japanese culture center and the compiling of a Kyrgyz-Japanese dictionary.

                    BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Two Kyrgyz policemen released by Muslim rebels tell a local television Oct 14 that four Japanese hostages still being held looked to be in good health. The two policemen were freed along with three other Kyrgyz nationals -- two other policemen and one soldier -- after being held captive by the armed rebels for about 50 days.

                      BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Human rights activist Tursunbek Akunov gives an interview to Kyodo News in Bishkek on Sept. 9, in which he said the field commander of Muslim guerrillas holding a dozen hostages has guaranteed that four Japanese hostages are safe and well. Akunov is brokering negotiations between the Kyrgyz military and the guerrillas.
