U.S. education secretary stresses value of small classes

TOKYO, Japan - U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley says that reducing classroom sizes is especially valuable for students in lower grades learning how to read. ''The research in America is very clear. Small classrooms work well in early grades if you have very good teachers teaching reading,'' Riley said in an interview with Kyodo News on April 1. Riley, who is in Tokyo for a meeting of the Group of Eight education ministers over the weekend.
