Diet names Yoshiro Mori premier
TOKYO, Japan - Yoshiro Mori (standing), former secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), receives applause from House of Representatives lawmakers after being elected prime minister during the house plenary session April 5. The House of Councillors also chose Mori as premier. Mori, 62, who was elected LDP president earlier in the day, succeeds Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, who remains in a coma after suffering a stroke April 2. The empty seat shown in the photo belongs to Obuchi.
