Osaka mint begins production of new 500 yen coin

OSAKA, Japan - A new 500 yen coin (L), which went into production on April 26, is shown next to a 500 yen coin currently in circulation. The Finance Ministry decided to issue the new coin after an increasing number of fake coins were found in vending machines across the nation. In most cases, altered South Korean 500 won coins, worth about 48 yen, were used. A 500 won coin is the same size as a 500 yen coin but weighs slightly more.

OSAKA, Japan - A Bunraku puppet receives a document on a 5 million yen grant in Osaka on Aug. 26, 2014, as the first recipient of the grant from Arts Support Kansai, a body launched in April to support cultural and artistic activities in the Kansai region. Keihanshin Building Co. President Kenjiro Nakano has decided to donate 5 million yen to the body to support the Bunraku puppet show.

Matsushita unveils longer-lasting alkali batteries

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. unveiled on Jan. 15 what it says is the world's longest-lasting alkali battery. The battery, to be sold under the brand name ''Evolta,'' lasts 20 to 50 percent longer than Matsushita's current alkali batteries, the company says. Evolta will be sold in Japan from April 26. An triple-A ''Evolta'' pack will be priced at just under 600 yen, about 20 percent more expensive than current Matsushita alkali batteries.

Japan to issue centenary coin for migration to Brazil

TOKYO, Japan - The Finance Ministry said on April 17 that it will issue a 5,00 yen commemorative coin (photo) around next March to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of migration of Japanese to Brazil in 1908. The coin's face has a design featuring a Japanese family of three who migrated to Brazil and the reverse side a design of cherry blossoms and coffee beans.
