Wartime laborers to sue M'shi Heavy in S. Korea

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Six South Koreans will file a suit with the Pusan District Court on May 1 demanding Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan pay some 600 million won (about 60 million yen) in damages for forcing them to labor in Japan during World War II, lawyers supporting wartime compensation suits announce at a news conference April 26. The lawsuit will be the first seeking compensation for Japan's wartime deeds to be filed by Asians in their own country against a Japanese company, according to the lawyers.

S. Korean court rejects damages suit by Korea workers

BUSAN, South Korea - Three of six South Korean plaintiffs come out of a court room after their damages suit was dismissed by the district court in Busan on Feb. 2. The Koreans who were affected by the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima while being forced to work as forced laborers in Japan during World War II, demanded Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. pay them unpaid wages and compensation totaling 606 million won (about 78 million yen), or 101 million won to each. The court said the statute of limitations on their claims had already expired.

Court dismisses damages suit by Chinese forced laborers

BEIJING, China - Plaintiffs listen to lawyers in Beijing on March 29 after the Fukuoka District Court in Japan dismissed earlier in the day a damages suit against the Japanese government and two Japanese companies -- Mitsui Mining Co. and Mitsubishi Materials Corp.-- filed by 45 Chinese who were forced to work at mines in Fukuoka Prefecture during World War II.

Koreans sue Japan over forced labor in Siberia

TOKYO, Japan - Former Korean soldiers in the Imperial Japanese Army and their kin hold a rally in Tokyo on June 12 before suing the Japanese government to seek compensation for unpaid wages for forced labor in Siberia after World War II. After the rally, a total of 164 former soldiers and bereaved relatives from South Korea filed the suit with the Tokyo District Court.

High court dismisses S. Koreans' claims over ship loss

OSAKA, Japan - South Korean plaintiffs enter the Osaka High Court on May 30 to hear a ruling on their claim for an apology and 2.8 billion yen in compensation from the Japanese government over the sinking of a Japanese navy transport ship in 1945. The court overturned a lower court ruling and rejected their claims. The ship, the Ukishima Maru, exploded and sank, killing 524 Korean forced laborers on board being returned home from Japan after World War II.

Chinese wartime forced laborers sue gov't, Niigata firm

NIIGATA, Japan - Chinese plaintiffs, joined by their lawyers and supporters, demonstrate outside the Niigata District Court on Sept. 12 before filing a lawsuit demanding the Japanese government and a harbor transport company in Niigata pay about 175 million yen in compensation for forcing them to labor in Japan during World War II.

Chinese A-bombing victim files damages suit

NIIGATA, Japan - Photo shows a news conference attended by lawyers for Zhang Wenbin, a 78-year-old Chinese man. He filed a lawsuit Aug. 31 against the Japanese government and a Niigata-based stevedore company, seeking damages in connection with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 when he was in the city as a prisoner. Zhang was forcibly brought to Japan during World War II. He did not attend the press meeting.
