FIFA begins inspection of World Cup venues in Japan

SAPPRO, Japan - A delegation of soccer's world governing body FIFA on May 8 inspects Sapporo Dome in Hokkaido, which is under construction as one of Japan's 10 stadiums to host matches in the 2002 World Cup finals to be co-hosted with South Korea. The delegation, led by FIFA executive Abdullah Aldabal, is also scheduled to visit venues in Oita, Niigata and Ibaraki Prefectures later this week.

TOKYO, Japan - The head of soccer's world governing body FIFA, Sepp Blatter (R), meets with Japanese Education Minister Tadamori Oshima, on Nov. 14. Blatter and Oshima discussed a proposal for the Japanese government to exempt FIFA from taxes on profits from commercial projects related to the 2002 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The Education Ministry is in charge of sports affairs in Japan.
