MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - Photo shows pupils at Ako Elementary School in the village of Miyake on Miyakejima Island, whose classes resume July 3, along with five other elementary and junior high schools after seven days of temporary closure caused by the threat of a volcanic eruption on the island. Life on Miyakejima, a small volcanic island 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, is gradually returning to normal.

The students have been living in Tokyo since volcanic eruptions on the island forced all 3,850 inhabitants to evacuate their homes last September.

                TOKYO, Japan - Thirty-nine youngsters, who were evacuated from Miyakejima Island last September in the wake of volcanic eruptions there, attend a ceremony to mark their graduation from junior high school, at Akikawa High School in Akiruno, western Tokyo, on March 19. Some of the students (standing) receive applause from lower grade students. The graduating students attended three junior high schools on the island before it was hit by the eruptions. They have since been boarding at Akikawa High School.
