Toyota Motor begins construction on plant in China's Tianjin

TIANJIN, China - Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Hiroshi Okuda (3rd from L) participates in a groundbreaking ceremony July 12 marking the start of construction on an automobile plant in Tianjin, northeastern China. The factory will be operated under a 50-50 joint venture between Japan's Toyota and Tianjin Automobile Xiali Corp. In 2002, the plant will begin producing 1.3-liter passenger cars bearing the Toyota badge.
