Lower house panel holds heated deliberations on Sogo collapse
TOKYO, Japan - Kimitaka Kuze, chief of the Financial Reconstruction Commission, on July 17 responds during intense deliberations at the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on the collapse of major department store operator Sogo Co. Sitting right is Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. Saddled with debts of 1.87 trillion yen, Sogo filed for court protection July 12 in the face of growing public criticism of its original rehabilitation scheme that would have involved the use of taxpayers' money to waive part of its debts.
