Spent nuclear fuel leaves Tokaimura for Rokkasho

TOKAIMURA, Japan - The 4,913-ton Rokuei Maru, carrying 11 tons of spent nuclear fuel, departs from a port at Tokaiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Dec. 16 for the village of Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture, marking Japan's first transport of such fuel after villagers agreed to its reprocessing. The cargo ship is transporting the fuel from the Tokai No. 2 reactor run by Japan Atomic Power Co. in Tokaimura, and is scheduled to arrive Tuesday in Rokkasho.

Fuel rods removed at Genkai nuclear plant

TOKYO, Japan - Work is underway to remove fuel rods from the No. 3 reactor at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Genkai nuclear power plant in Genkai Town, Saga Prefecture, in March 2013. Japan did not include 640kg of unused plutonium in its annual report to the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2012 and 2013. The unreported plutonium is part of the MOX fuel which was loaded to the No. 3 reactor in March 2011 during its regular checkup but was removed unused in March 2013 as the reactor has remained idle since the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

AOMORI, Japan - A ship carrying a cargo of high-level radioactive waste, produced through reprocessing of spent Japanese nuclear fuel in Britain, arrives at a port in Aomori Prefecture for storage on Feb. 27, 2013. The waste, produced from fuel used at plants operated by Chubu Electric Power Co., Chugoku Electric Power Co. and Kansai Electric Power Co., will be stored at a facility of Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. in the village of Rokkasho in the prefecture.
