Driver killed, oil leaked as truck overturns

TSU, Japan - Men work to remove fuel oil after a traffic accident on the Ise Expressway in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, Dec. 21. A 62-year-old driver was killed and 1,000 liters of fuel oil spilled onto the road when his tank truck overturned on the expressway.

Fish-cake cooking oil converted to bio-diesel fuel in Miyagi

SENDAI, Japan - The city of Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan's largest fish-cake processing base, has been producing bio-diesel from cooking oil disposed by fish-cake makers in the city, selling the product at 105 yen per liter, substantially cheaper than ordinary diesel sold at gas filling stations. Each year, fish-cake makers in Shiogama dispose of more than 500,000 liters of used cooking oil, which had been sold to outside dealers for use as fat in pet food or as ink solvent. The city started converting used cooking oil to bio-diesel in November 2006 with subsidies from the Ministry of Environment. Korean tanker collides with Thai container ship

NAGOYA, Japan - The South Korean tanker Woo Ryong, with 12 crew members, is seen in the Pacific Ocean off Toba, Mie Prefecture, on July 5 following its collision with the 1,318-ton Thai container ship Ratanathida, with 19 crew members, earlier in the day. The 1,448-ton Woo Ryong spilled 2,600 liters of heavy fuel oil. One of its crew members was injured, the Japan Coast Guard said.

SAITAMA, Japan - Two truck drivers were killed and about 50 drums of alkyl benzene used for detergent were scattered across the road when their trucks collided on the Tohoku expressway in Hasuda, Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on Jan. 24.
