Nikkei ends morning slightly above 12,500

That day, the Nikkei Stock Average ended the morning session off 178.10 points, or 1.4%, at 12,503.56. The benchmark index fell to as low as 12,428.48 at one point in the morning, down over 250 points. It was the first time since September 1985 for the index to fall below 12,500.
