Ex-Sumitomo execs to pay 430 mil. yen in damages

OSAKA, Japan - The Osaka District Court on March 15 holds a conciliation session for five former executives of Sumitomo Corp. and a corporate shareholder over huge losses from Sumitomo's unauthorized copper deals. The former Sumitomo executives agreed with Yubo Sangyo K.K., an Osaka-based textile firm, to pay 430 million yen in damages to the company for their failure to detect unauthorized deals by an employee.

The Osaka District Court the same day ordered Daiwa Bank's executives to pay the bank $775 million in compensation for losses incurred by the bank from unauthorized bond deals at its New York branch. Plaintiffs accused the bank's management of failing to take appropriate actions to prevent former New York branch trader Toshihide Iguchi from engaging in unauthorized U.S. Treasury bond trading over 11 years from 1984. Iguchi was convicted in the United States in 1996 and jailed.

        Lawyers representing 74 shareholders and convertible bond holders of failed supermarket chain operator Yaohan Japan Corp. file a 260 million yen damages suit with the Osaka District Court on Thursday Feb. 4 against Kazuo Wada, the chairman of Yaohan, and 10 other former Yaohan executives.
