'Hoogie,' 'Thorpedo' cruise into semis at swimming worlds
FUKUOKA, Japan - Ian Thorpe (R), gunning for his fifth gold medal of the swimming world championships, goes back into battle with Dutch rival Pieter Van den Hoogenband (L) on July 26 as both men sauntered into the 100-meter freestyle semifinals. Van den Hoogenband touched the wall first in 48.96 seconds with Thorpe easing himself home in second in 49.21 at Marine Messe Fukuoka.
