Hiroshima marks 56th anniversary of A-bombing

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Some 50,000 people, including Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, attend a ceremony in Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima on Aug. 6 to commemorate the 56th anniversary of the city's atomic bombing. The number of victims was 221,893 as of Aug. 6, including an estimated 140,000 who died by the end of 1945 as a direct result of the bomb.

                HIROSHIMA, Japan - This photo of U.S. airman Hugh Atkinson, who died in the atomic-bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, was registered at the national A-bomb victims memorial hall in Hiroshima on July 29. Atkinson from Washington was held prisoner in Hiroshima with a comrade after his plane was shot down off Kure in the same prefecture on July 28, 1945.

                  HIROSHIMA, Japan - A photo of Cpl. John Long Jr., an American prisoner of war who died in the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima, was registered at the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall of Atomic Bomb Victims on Jan. 4 by his 34-year-old relative Nathan Long who lives in Tokyo. The photo is the first to be displayed of American POWs who were taken to Hiroshima and died there after the United Stated dropped the bomb on the city.

                      TOKYO, Japan - Sculptor Katsuzo Entsuba (in file photo), a recipient of the Order of Culture, died of congestive heart failure at a hospital in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture on Oct. 31, his family said. He was 97. Entsuba is known for his works featuring the theme of peace, such as the ''Goddess of Peace'' in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, to commemorate student victims of the 1945 atomic bombing who had been conscripted to work at war-related factories during World War II.
