Opinions sharply divided over Koizumi's proposed shrine visit
TOKYO, Japan - Naoto Kan (standing), secretary general of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, speaks at a meeting of lawmakers from four opposition parties opposed to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's planned Aug. 15 visit to Yasukuni Shrine. Meanwhile, a group of lawmakers supporting the plan visited the prime minister's official residence the same day to urge him to make the visit to the Shinto shrine, which honors the nation's war dead.
